This expansive sculpture captures the significant yet humble structure of the pine cone. Part of a tree’s symbolism is the life cycles of birth, maturity, decay, death and rebirth. This sculpture signifies the rebirth. With the main function of a pine cone as a protector and generator of new life, this symbol of optimism, potential, and growth honours and memorializes the gifts provided by trees in their lifetime.
Pine cones date back to pre-historic times and throughout this history have represented immortality and human enlightenment. The cone scales are flared outward implying favourable conditions for seed dissemination, a lovely metaphor for an urban neighbourhood reflecting positive elements in the community to foster promise and possibility. The sculpture’s location, in the heart of downtown Revelstoke, BC, endorses the power of art to connect people to their natural landscape and to invite feelings of community pride, reflection and well-being.
“Every tree is valuable to its community and each tree’s well-being depends on its community.” From Wohlieben’s Hidden Life of Trees
This sculpture is made from mild steel sheet and steel pipe. The outline of the cone scales was plasma cut then hot shaped by forge and hammer with a naturally rusting finish.
